Whakarongo

about

Kaupapa of this waiata (song):

I wrote this waiata around the time my Nan passed away. I sang it at her tangi (funeral). It is also a karakia (prayer) /karanga (calling) to our tīpuna (ancestors) and Atua (Gods), asking them to take care of our spirits as they pass over into the realm of Rehuā. It is a reminder to us mokopuna (grand-children) that everything is going to be ok if we just sing. It rounds off with us letting go of the aituā, stop crying and just look at all the gifts from the wombs of our ancestors. It's about gratitude also how Nan and our tīpuna taught us to be.

lyrics

Whakarongo ki te karanga
Tīpuna wairua o neherā
Horahiatia, tuwhera i to whetū--
Rere ake, rere ake ki te rae o rehu.

Whakawhetai ki te waiata
o ngā mokopuna

Tī ori ori
Tu i tui ā

Hei aha te, aituā.
Kāti i tō pouritanga
Tirohia ki enei,
ēnei kākano i rūia mai i to kōpūtanga
