about
Kaupapa of this waiata:
I wrote this waiata in a time of hardship. Just after I failed my last assignment for my final assessment at university. I felt like I was being challenged for being & speaking about our truths, identity and mātauranga given to us by our ancestors. It's a song about being institutionalised, colonised, hegemonic discourse, imperialisms, etc. It's a song about being trapped in the MATRIX and us going along with it as if we swallow a blue pill like nothing ever happened to us or our ancestors.
It is also a karakia to our ancestors to set us free. To aid us into our true being and to help us trust in who we are.
I feel the waiata is a psychedelic trip like taking the drug of choice and end with us woke to these foreign ideals to embody who we truly are. Conscious!
lyrics
(V1)
Infectious conformity, single minded society.
From the beginning of my days.
Was enslaved, to fit in.
If you coloured, outside lines.
You become reformed inside.
[Chorus] x2
Ancestors intervention
Free me from
this illusion
(V2)
This magician medication,
had me spellbound.
This placebo effect over me
Keeps me locked in my fantasy
My dream world be my get away to reality.
[Chorus] x2
(Bridge)
The regularity of this normality
[Be that nine to five kind of life]
I keep spinning around
On this merry go round
[Where will this race end}
I can't spend my time
On this menial line
[We on gridlock, we on the grind]
Institutionalized
Ancestors, ancestors, ancestors,
ancestors, ancestors, ancestors,
ancestors, ancestors, ancestors,
ancestors, ancestors, ancestors,
ancestors,ancestors, ancestors,
…...…free me from this illusion.
